9.5.4. Lack of courtesy

While in theory the law forbids the introduction of new species to our so-called natural environments, many citizens do not hesitate to do so. Thus, many Florida turtles have been thrown back into our water bodies to get rid of them. From time to time, a piranha is reported in a river (or a fish that looks like one), probably because a fishkeeper has emptied their aquarium! Not to mention the bullfrog, originally from Florida, introduced in 1968 to Gironde by the owner of a castle to decorate the pond of his park. Lack of courtesy is in fact at the origin of the introduction of many species in the world and in Europe. In France, the wels catfish, this big voracious fish, has been introduced to our rivers by fishermen, with impunity… yet it is forbidden! What did the fishing police do about it (Bravard and Lévêque 2020)?
